I started facing this problem some days ago that suddenly speakers lost sound and system becomes muted. However devices shows that nothing is mute and everything working fine.
Accessing Manage Audio Devices --> Speakers and Headphones --> Configure and then click on Test shows a dialog that its being used by another application.
I tried to figure this out using multiple features, but in vain. So long story short, here is a tip I find to restore sound without restarting Windows 8:
Computer Management --> Device Manager --> Sound Video and Game Controllers.
Disable Audio Devices and then Re-Enabled them after some time and then it started working fine...
Not sure if this is applicable on other systems, but I think, its a generic method, so may be beneficial to many other people..
